Deck Building 101

  Summer is fast approaching so that means fun times in the great outdoors which can be just as fun in your own back yard.  Whether you're sitting with friends and family, reading and relaxing or just enjoying nature and beautiful weather, a deck is a perfect place to spend a lot of your time.  If you've thought about building a deck, you need to plan it carefully.  This is a project that requires organization, preparation and proper building.  The property value of your home and it's appearance in the end can depend on it.

Consider this before you build your backyard deck:

  You know for sure that you want to build a deck.  Figure out what your budget is. That is the first thing to think about.  Once that is done, determine where you want it and what design you would like and the building materials you will need to buy all being within your budget.

You have decided what kind of deck you want. You now have to decide whether or not you are going to build the deck yourself or will you hire a professional to do it for you.  If you do decide to get a contractor, you will be guaranteed results and not have to stress over issues that will arise from your lack of experience.  Be sure to decide exactly what you want before you hire anyone.  Either try to get references from a contractor or use someone that a friend or family member has used.  Someone at work or a neighbour may also know of a reputable company.

How to find the right contractor:

When speaking to contractors about what sort of deck you want and what amount of money you want to spend, get estimates..let them know what is not affordable and things that you will not accept.  Let them know that you have done your homework on the costs of materials.  Find out if the company is licensed.  Do they have readily available references for you? Don't rush with the first company that gives you a quote.  Always know everything the quote includes and get a signed copy.
